Preparing for boarding school is an exciting step, and thoughtful packing can make the transition smoother and much more comfortable. Whether you are joining for the first time or returning after a break, knowing what to pack for boarding school in the UK helps ensure that you arrive feeling organised, confident, and ready for the term ahead.
What to Take: Essentials for Life in Boarding
Clothing and Labelling
All luggage must be clearly labelled with the student’s full name, including every item of clothing. This simple step helps avoid lost property and keeps house life running smoothly.
Students may wear their own choice of clothing after school hours. A practical selection of sweaters, shirts, skirts, jeans, or trousers is ideal. Laundry is completed weekly, so two to three changes of casual clothes are usually enough.
A smart outfit is also needed for concerts, evening events, or occasions that require more formal dress. Black clothing with suitable shoes works well.
Given the British climate, a waterproof jacket or warm winter coat is strongly recommended.
Toiletries and Personal Care
Students should bring a toiletry bag with everyday essentials such as soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, and sunscreen. Anti-bacterial hand soap is available around the School at Roedean, but many students prefer to have their own.
Other helpful items include:
- Hair bands or slides in black, brown, or navy (not required for Sixth Form)
- A bathrobe or dressing gown
- A basket or small carrier for taking toiletries to the bathroom
Useful Extras
Many students appreciate bringing a few additional items that make boarding life easier and more comfortable:
- Alarm clock
- Clothes hangers (around ten)
- Spare charger or power pack
- Hairdryer
- Headphones or earbuds
- Torch
- Extra name tapes for labelling new clothes
Electrical Items and Safety
Students may bring two or three adaptors suitable for UK plugs. The UK’s standard voltage is approximately 240V.
All electrical items and adaptors must be checked and certified by the School’s electrician before use. This is essential for safety in the boarding houses.

What to Leave at Home
To help keep boarding houses safe and efficient, certain items are not permitted:
- Kettles
- Electric blankets
- Little cookers or other cooking equipment
- Oil heaters
- Any electrical item that has not been checked by the School electrician
Large or unnecessary belongings should also be avoided, as storage space is limited and rooms are designed to be practical and uncluttered.
Tips from Current Boarders
To make the move feel more personal and less overwhelming, here are a few tips from existing boarders:
- Bring personal decorations such as photos, posters, or anything that reminds you of home, and it can really make your space feel yours.
- Consider slippers: they’re incredibly handy for walking around the house comfortably once you’re back from lessons.
- Pack a spare power-bank or charger: power outlets can be in high demand, and having a backup helps.
