Over the half-term break, a group of Roedean students embarked on an exciting journey to Denmark for a week of creative learning, cultural exchange, and immersive arts experiences at the Design and Håndværk Efterskole School (DHE).

Upon arrival, our students quickly adapted to life at DHE. Some shared rooms with Danish students, allowing for immediate cultural exchange and new friendships. Days began with a brisk 2km morning walk at 7 a.m., followed by breakfast. Daily assemblies featured singing from the school’s songbook, with classics like Let It Be and Wonderwall, providing a vibrant start to the day.

Our students had the opportunity to explore jewellery, fashion and textiles, woodcraft, ceramics, and classical art. From carving wooden spoons to soldering silver rings with gemstones and shaping leather animals, they acquired new skills while collaborating in a hands-on, practical environment.

Life at DHE also involved embracing different routines and responsibilities. Phones were kept away during the day, meals were structured and plentiful, and cleaning was a shared task. Students helped clear tables, wash dishes, sweep floors, and even do their own laundry. These responsibilities not only fostered independence but also emphasised the value of community and teamwork.

Cultural enrichment extended beyond the classroom, as the group enjoyed a Danish lesson exploring the country’s language and ventured out into the local community, walking along a snowy beach, climbing a lighthouse, and sampling local cuisine.

The week concluded with a trip to Copenhagen, where our students explored Nyhavn’s colourful streets and visited the SMK National Gallery of Denmark.

This trip was an unforgettable experience for our students, who returned with new skills, lifelong memories, and budding friendships with their Danish peers. The warmth and generosity of the DHE community left a lasting impression, and we eagerly anticipate hosting them at Roedean for future visits.
