21 million women in Afghanistan are no longer permitted to speak in public, according to a new law passed by the Taliban this week. 21 million Afghan women have already been denied education, and they must be fully veiled whenever they are in public. In response to this, in Chapel this week, I encouraged the students to use their voices at Roedean, and to take full advantage of the freedoms they have to learn and to express themselves. The Lawrence sisters’ founding ethos was exactly this, that girls should have every opportunity available to boys.
