Lower School

Opportunities outside of the classroom inspire curiosity, builds confidence and broadens horizons through meaningful experiences.

Complementing the curriculum, girls in the Lower School enjoy a rich variety of experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom. From developing valuable life skills and exploring the natural world to embracing opportunities that stretch and inspire them academically, these experiences nurture independence, inspire discovery and deepen understanding.

Wild Fridays

Wild Fridays give girls the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and make the most of Roedean’s unique natural surroundings. Through a diverse programme of outdoor and practical experiences, from bushcraft and farming, to sailing, mountain biking and adventure activities, girls develop new skills, embrace challenge and discover new interests, while building independence and a deeper appreciation of the world around them.

Head Heart Hand

Our Head, Heart, Hand programme encourages girls to look beyond the traditional curriculum and discover new ways to think, feel and do. Through a stimulating range of practical experiences, girls are challenged intellectually and encouraged to engage thoughtfully. From first aid and cooking, to textiles, coding and British Sign Language, girls are inspired to develop valuable skills for life.

Academic Lectures

The weekly programme of academic lectures, open to all girls, comprises an eclectic mix of fields and disciplines, designed to challenge, extend, and broaden intellects. Some lectures are given by visiting speakers and others by Roedean staff, who enjoy the opportunity of revealing a particular passion to the students. Recent examples include: ‘The Unravelling of the Versailles Treaty’, ‘What is poetry?’ (featuring Soviet poetry), ‘Postmodernist Thought’, and ‘Big Numbers’.

Trips and Residentials

Trips and Residentials offer girls the opportunity to explore new ideas, cultures and landscapes in meaningful ways, enriching and supporting their academic learning. From visits to Arundel Castle and Wakehurst, to ski trips in Italy and adventures at Blackland Farm, girls are encouraged to experience the world beyond the classroom. Each year, the Lower School also embarks on an exciting residential, providing opportunities to discover new places, embrace new challenges and create lasting memories together.
