As the Spring Term draws to a close, it is the perfect moment to reflect on what has been a vibrant and enriching few months at Roedean. From outstanding academic achievements and inspiring guest speakers to spectacular performances, meaningful charitable initiatives, and exciting trips across the globe, this term has truly showcased the breadth of opportunity and spirit within the Roedean community.
Academic Excellence and Intellectual Curiosity
This term has been marked by exceptional academic progress and inspiring opportunities for intellectual growth. A particular highlight was the return of former Roedean students Kaitlin and Hannah, now studying Veterinary Medicine and Medicine respectively. Speaking to our student-led MeDeVet Club, they offered honest and insightful reflections on university life, helping to guide current students as they consider their own future pathways.
We were also delighted to celebrate excellent examination success. Nearly 43% of Year 11 students who sat their Maths GCSE early achieved outstanding results, with multiple scores above 90%, including a perfect 100% which is a fantastic accomplishment. Similarly, students excelled in IGCSE French, demonstrating the strength of academic commitment across subjects.
Beyond the classroom, students were inspired by a visit from acclaimed author Sarah Crossan, who shared her creative journey and offered valuable insights into storytelling and the writing process. British Science Week brought further excitement, with a dynamic programme of hands-on experiments, lectures, and activities, including practical sessions, a talk on the evolution of the cosmos, and an inspiring Ocean Film Festival screening.

Creativity in the Arts
The creative arts have flourished this term, with students demonstrating remarkable talent, dedication, and collaboration.
Our Dance Showcase was a true celebration of movement and expression, featuring 53 students performing 24 diverse pieces, from ballet to contemporary dance. The standard was exceptionally high, with performances that were both technically accomplished and emotionally engaging.
Equally impressive was our whole-school production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Bringing together students from Year 7 to Year 13, the show was a vibrant, high-energy success. From the dynamic performances on stage to the tireless work of the backstage crew managing lighting, sound, and props, the production was a testament to teamwork and creativity. The student musicians, performing alongside professionals, delivered a polished and powerful score that brought the magical world of Willy Wonka to life.
Meanwhile, our musicians took part in a conducting workshop and concert with professional conductor Natalia Luis-Bassa and our annual Chamber Music Day with Ensemble Reza, culminating in a collaborative concert that highlighted both skill and creativity. Our scholars also put on a recital at the end of term and the wider student body also had the opportunity to perform in more intimate settings through our teatime recitals, building confidence in a supportive environment.

Community, Culture and Co-Curricular Life
Roedean’s co-curricular life has been as rich and varied as ever. Programmes such as Wild Friday and the HHH initiative have offered students opportunities to explore activities ranging from mountain biking and rock climbing to coding, self-defence, and British Sign Language.
Culture Day was once again a standout moment of the term. Entirely student-led, the event celebrated the diversity of our community through traditional dress, a lively runway show, and a wonderful array of international cuisine. It was a joyful and meaningful reminder of the importance of inclusion, identity, and global understanding.
Students were also deeply moved by a visit from Holocaust survivor Dorit Oliver-Wolff, whose powerful testimony ensured that the lessons of history remain vivid and relevant. International Women’s Day brought further inspiration, with guest speakers from a wide range of professions encouraging students to think ambitiously about their futures.
World Book Day was celebrated in true Roedean style, with literary karaoke, costumes, and quizzes bringing books to life and fostering a love of reading across the school. Meanwhile, social events such as Bonkers Bingo and collaborations with Tonbridge added moments of fun and connection.

Sporting Success and Team Spirit
It has been a busy and successful term for sport at Roedean.
We were proud to host the U12 and U13 SISNA Netball Tournament, welcoming teams for a day of high-quality competition played in fantastic spirit. Our campus also hosted football tournaments for younger age groups, the Badminton County Round Nationals, and the Hockey U13 Southeast Cup and Plate tournament, highlighting the enthusiasm for girls’ sport across a variety of disciplines.
Our students have taken part in a variety of fixtures and competitions this term, achieving many impressive wins, including the SISNA Shield. Staff versus student matches also provided fun and competitive opportunities that brought the whole school community together.
Additionally, a team of our staff and students ran in the Brighton Half Marathon, where we were a sponsor of the event and proudly supported runners at the finish line.

Charity and Global Awareness
This term, our community has come together to make a meaningful difference through our partnership with the Catalyst Foundation. Supporting three girls in Zimbabwe and Zambia, students have built personal connections through regular video exchanges, gaining insight into their lives and aspirations.
Our “Cycle to Harare” challenge has been a particularly inspiring initiative. Staff and students have worked collectively to cycle the 8,350 kilometres from Brighton to Harare, raising funds to provide bicycles that will help these girls travel to school more safely and efficiently. This initiative reflects the compassion and global awareness that underpin life at Roedean.
The Community Action Programme (CAP) continues to provide our Year 12 students the chance to develop important skills such as teamwork, leadership, resilience, empathy, and communication. This year, students worked with organisations including Chailey Heritage Foundation, The Somerset Centre, St. Mark’s CE Primary School, and Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, as well as participating in local initiatives with Community Textiles, CAP Art, Junior Roedean Academy, and the Community BSL group. These experiences help students build confidence, broaden perspectives, and make a real positive impact on their communities while fostering personal growth and social responsibility.

Futures and Aspirations
Preparing students for life beyond school remains a central focus. This term’s working lunches and Pathways Lectures have provided valuable opportunities to engage with professionals from a wide range of industries, helping students explore potential career paths.
We were delighted to host our annual Futures Fair, bringing together universities and industry experts to offer guidance and inspiration. Students gained first-hand insights into careers spanning medicine, finance, the arts, sport, and more.
A particularly proud moment has been the success of our Oxbridge applicants, with six offers received this year—the highest number in recent memory. Our Oxbridge Conference further strengthened these aspirations, as returning alumnae shared their experiences and encouraged students to recognise the value of sustained curiosity and engagement.

Trips and Global Experiences
This term, our students have travelled far and wide, gaining fresh perspectives and unforgettable experiences.
A creative writing trip to the Isle of Sheppey provided the perfect setting for inspiration, with students producing imaginative work in a uniquely atmospheric environment.
International opportunities included our business students exploring innovation and strategy during a trip to Disneyland Paris, gaining insight into one of the world’s most successful global brands. Creative arts students travelled to Denmark, developing practical skills across a range of disciplines. Our geographers embarked on an extraordinary trip to Iceland, exploring volcanic landscapes, witnessing the Northern Lights, and bringing their studies vividly to life through hands-on experience.
This term also saw our annual South Africa exchange. A group of students travelled to our sister school to experience life alongside their peers, while students from Roedean South Africa returned to Brighton to fully immerse themselves in school life, participate in house competitions, and explore Brighton.

House Spirit and School Community
House events have once again played a vital role in building community and school spirit. From House Maths and House Music to badminton, dodgeball and netball competitions, students have embraced opportunities to collaborate, compete, and celebrate together.
These events not only foster friendly competition but also encourage confidence, creativity, and foster sisterhood across all year groups.

Welcoming the Wider Community
It has also been a busy term for our Admissions and Alumnae Office. Our Discovery Day welcomed prospective students to experience life at Roedean, while our Explore and Connect events invited families to tour the campus and speak with the Senior Leadership Team. The Agents’ Lunch also strengthened our relationships with partners.
Founders’ Day provided a moment of reflection, honouring the legacy of the Lawrence Sisters and remembering members of the Roedean community who are no longer with us.

Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the Spring Term, it is clear that Roedean continues to be a place of energy, ambition, and opportunity. The achievements of our students are a testament to their dedication and to the supportive environment that surrounds them.
We look forward to the Summer Term with excitement, building on the momentum of the start of 2026 and continuing to provide experiences that challenge, inspire, and empower every student to thrive.
