Sustainability at Roedean

Our climate action pledge: Embracing a Greener Future

At Roedean School, we are passionately committed to creating a sustainable future. Our journey towards sustainability is driven by a profound sense of responsibility to our community and the extraordinary environment we are privileged to grow and thrive in. We are proud to share our initiatives and the progress we have made in our efforts to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

Our Vision – “Be the planet’s turning point”.

Roedean’s vision for sustainability is anchored in the belief that education extends beyond the classroom. We aim to inspire our students to be conscientious global citizens who understand the impact of their actions on the world around them. Our approach to sustainability is holistic, encompassing every aspect of school life, from our curriculum to our ground’s operations.

Our carbon reduction plan will focus on reducing waste, improving our recycling, enhancing biodiversity, cultivating energy efficiency and strengthening global citizenship.

Eco-Friendly Grounds

Waste Reduction: Our comprehensive recycling programme ensures that waste is minimised and properly sorted. We have also introduced composting facilities to handle organic waste.

Biodiversity: Roedean boasts extensive green spaces and SSSI Coast line, including our farm, nature trail, dedicated wildlife gardens and bug hotel, two ponds, an orchard and hedgerows, promoting biodiversity, and providing hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Sustainable Practices

Water Conservation: We are aiming to implement water-saving technologies such as rainwater harvesting systems and low-flow fixtures to reduce our water consumption.

Energy Efficiency: Our buildings are equipped with energy-efficient lighting and heating systems, and we continuously seek ways to improve energy management across the campus.

Sustainable Transportation: To reduce our carbon footprint, we encourage the use of public transportation, cycling, and carpooling among our students and staff. Our new greener fleet of vehicles have joined in 2024 to help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

Educational Programmes

Sustainability Curriculum: Sustainability is integrated into our curriculum across all year levels. Students engage in projects and activities that highlight the importance of environmental conservation and responsible living.

Eco Council: Our student-led Eco Council plays a vital role in promoting sustainability initiatives within the school. The club organises events, campaigns, and educational assemblies and workshops to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Partnerships and Collaborations: We collaborate with local environmental organisations and participate in community projects (such as the Cut Your Carbon campaign) to extend our sustainability efforts beyond the school grounds.

Achievements and Recognition

Roedean has appointed a Sustainability Lead to oversee our environmental strategy. We are proud to be working towards achieving our Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, this will be a testament to our commitment to environmental education and sustainable school operations. We have been accredited this year with our Plastic Free Status working with Surfers Against Sewage.

Roedean Eco Code

Our Eco-Code, developed by our Eco-Council, reflects the values and commitments of our Eco-School. It serves as our mission statement, inspiring students, staff, and the wider Roedean community to embrace sustainable practices,  making our school greener and our planet cleaner!
