World Mental Health Day is an annual initiative founded by the World Federation for Mental Health that aims to raise global awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigma surrounding them. This day serves as a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health, and it encourages open conversations about mental well-being.

At Roedean, we understand that life’s “ups and downs” can sometimes overwhelm students. That’s why, with World Mental Health Day in mind, we’ve taken the opportunity to focus on positive coping strategies during tutor time this week. These sessions were designed to equip our students with tools to manage stress and maintain balance. Through discussions, students were reminded of the importance of self-care and the need to prevent stress from escalating. Additionally, in PSHE classes, students learnt practical techniques such as meditation and grounding exercises to help them navigate anxious moments.

In support of the Young Minds campaign, our students and staff were invited to adorn their clothes with something yellow as a way to “brighten up the world” and show solidarity for mental health awareness. We also organised an activity to design a logo for our new initiative, “Seen, Known, Heard.” This initiative reflects our pastoral commitment to ensuring that every Roedean student feels:

Known for who they are—their beliefs, talents, and aspirations. Seen for their individuality, while celebrating their diversity, successes, and resilience. Heard when they need to speak out—whether to challenge ideas, contribute new ones, or raise awareness for causes they’re passionate about.

The pastoral team works collaboratively to ensure that every student has at least one key adult in school they can turn to for support, reinforcing these core principles.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to introduce the Wellbeing Hub after half-term. This online platform will provide a wealth of tips and advice on maintaining mental health and happiness at school and home for our students. It will offer guidance on a wide range of topics, including mental well-being, neurodiversity, friendships, and the impact of social media. The Hub will be a valuable resource, offering students support whenever they need it.

Good mental health and well-being are critical to a student’s ability to learn, grow, and enjoy their formative years. By helping our students develop resilience and healthy coping strategies, we empower them to handle life’s challenges and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
