Beyond the Classroom

Giving students the skills and knowledge to create personal and imaginative work

‘When I was studying in my previous school, art students , had limited opportunities to choose their own artists to research or develop personal ideas. My work was mainly based on set themes and frameworks provided by the teacher. However, studying art here has significantly changed my perspective. I have learned the importance of independent thinking and creative decision making, and I have gradually become more confident in developing my own ideas and making choices.’ Elaine

Creativity

The Art Department at Roedean is a vibrant hub of creativity, where girls are encouraged to experiment, develop ideas and express themselves through diverse artistic approaches.

Exploration

This approach results in imaginative and varied work, supported by practical curriculum lessons, alongside a range of enrichment opportunities including courses, workshops, life drawing and artist-led sessions.

Inspiration

Art trips have included visits to Barcelona, an exchange with a school in Denmark, Graduate Fashion Week and printmaking workshops, offering further opportunities for inspiration and creative exploration.

Exploring Art & Design

Students in Years 7 to 9 become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design. In lessons, the girls gain knowledge of great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of art. Co-curricular clubs and workshops allow the girls to explore their ideas through traditional and new media.

Developing Creative Practice

In the GCSE Course, girls become familiar with a range of creative processes, including printmaking, sculpture and three-dimensional media, textiles, fashion design and lens-based media.

A Pathway to Creative Careers

The Art Department offers a range of courses to allow our students to tailor their A Level Art experience towards a broad range of Higher Education courses and exciting creative careers. Offering Art, Photography and Textiles, as well as a Foundation Art, Design and Media BTEC, our Art students have gone on to a range of destinations and careers, such as Architecture, Fashion, and Product Design at Central St Martins.

Top Grades for Orange and Fine Art at Edinburgh

Congratulations to Orange, who has been awarded A grades in Art and Photography, and a B grade in Chinese. These grades are all the more extraordinary, since she had to transfer to Roedean halfway through her Sixth Form years, after her school unfortunately closed. Moving schools at such a pivotal time in her education was daunting, but we are delighted that she has been so successful. She said, ‘Looking back on my time at Roedean, it still feels a little like a dream. When I first joined the Art Department, I was nervous and not very confident in sharing my ideas, but my teachers encouraged me to speak up and develop them. I will always remember their kindness and support. I wish all the students at Roedean all the best and hope Roedean continues to grow and thrive.‘
