Last week, we were delighted to announce that Roedean has been featured as one of the best places for school cricket in Sussex in The Cricketer’s highly esteemed 2024 Schools Guide. We’re thrilled to share the latest news that not only did we make the list, but we secured a spot in the top 20! Here’s an inside look at what the cricketers had to say about Roedean’s cricketing prowess:

Impressive Facilities

Our cricketing haven boasts many facilities, including 2 astro wickets, a lush grass square, and even softball fixtures on the hockey Astro. Beyond our campus, we extend our reach to the local community, having hosted fixtures at Rottingdean CC. For training, we offer 3 indoor nets, 2 outdoor astro wickets with cages, and 6 new grass nets introduced in the summer of 2022.

Community Engagement and Affiliations

Roedean is not just about cricket; we believe in community engagement. We were early participants in discussions surrounding the Brighton Urban Cricket Plan, offering our facilities to the community. An informal partnership with Rottingdean CC further underscores our commitment to fostering cricket beyond our boundaries.

Emerging Talent and Rich History

Bella, a Year 7 student at Roedean, stands out as a quick bowler, aggressive batter, and a formidable fielder. She currently shines in the Sussex U12 team, exemplifying the rich cricketing talent nurtured at our school. Our cricketing history dates back to 1889, and we proudly hosted the annual Lords and Commons cricket fixture in the past.

Cultural Cricketing Connections

Cecilia Robinson, who coached cricket at Roedean from 1949 to 1981, left an indelible mark. She toured Australia with the England women’s team in 1963, adding a touch of international flair to our cricketing legacy.

Setting Ourselves Apart

Roedean has a special connection with Sussex Women’s cricket, having been the venue for squad trials and fixtures during the formative years of the women’s game. Our commitment to advancing women’s cricket sets us apart.

Fielding Success

Our recent progress is evident in the introduction of fixtures for U12E and U13D teams, expanding opportunities for girls to play.

Future Plans for Roedean Cricket

Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans to erect a fence along the adjacent main road. This not only ensures safety but also paves the way for hosting more home fixtures. Additionally, we aim to resurrect the use of the grass square, adding a classic touch to our modern cricketing facilities.

In conclusion, the journey of Roedean in the cricketing arena is a tale of tradition, progress, and a commitment to community and diversity. We’re proud of our past, excited about our present, and optimistic about the future as we continue to nurture cricketing talent within our school and beyond.
