In November, students from Year 7 to 13 at Roedean eagerly embraced the challenge presented by the annual UK BEBRAS competition. Hosted online and organised by Oxford University in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the competition aimed to infuse a sense of fun into learning while inspiring students to cultivate essential algorithmic and computational thinking skills crucial in today’s tech-driven industries.

Participation on a Global Scale:

The scope of the competition extended far beyond the school gates, with over 400,000 students participating across the United Kingdom and more than 50 countries worldwide, underscoring the need for computational thinking skills and highlighting the significance of events like BEBRAS in fostering these capabilities. Throughout the challenge, the participating students, especially the girls, demonstrated not only their computational thinking skills but also exhibited commendable enthusiasm, determination, and perseverance. Their efforts undoubtedly contributed to the success of the competition, showcasing the importance of nurturing such skills from an early age.

Recognition and Awards:

Certificates were awarded in three categories: Participation, Merit, and Distinction. Moreover, special acknowledgement was given to students with the highest scores within their respective categories. An impressive 43 students from Roedean scored in the top 10% nationally, earning them an invitation to participate in the upcoming online Oxford University Computing Challenge scheduled for January next month.

The success of our students in the annual UK BEBRAS competition highlights not only their prowess in algorithmic and computational thinking but also the school’s dedication to nurturing these vital skills.
